Description
Depicting the goddess Artemis, the original marble statue was discovered during excavations in 1792 by the entrepreneur, dealer and antiquarian, Gavin Hamilton on the property of the Prince Borghese at Gabi, near Rome . In 1807 the sculpture was sold to Napoleon and was thence exhibited in the Louvre ,Paris, where it remains today .Named by the Greeks as Artemis , and called Diana in the Roman world ,the beautiful virgin goddess of hunting and wild nature is depicted standing in contrapposto position supported against a tree stump, dressed in a loose robe or 'chiton', buttoned at the shoulder, together with strapped Grecian sandals. Inscribed mark on the base to read Rtion SAUVAGE. H: 12 1/4 in.
