Description
A Very rare old wooden mask from the Baule peoples, Cote De Ivorie, West Africa. Carved wood with precise carving style, raised facial features and a carefully carved coiffure. The mask interior and edges all show consistent wear and handling, suggesting generations of ceremonial use. The mask itself measures 17 x 8 inches ( Not counting the professional display stand which is included.) Among the Baule such masks appeared in the final sequence of an operatic public entertainment known as Mblo. Mblo performances consist of a succession of dances that escalate in complexity and importance, culminating ultimately in tributes to the community's most distinguished member. Individuals honored in this way are depicted by a mask that is conceived of as their artistic double or namesake, hence the name "Portrait Mask"** Of Note : There are Museum or collection numbers painted within the mask interior, I am still researching to find out from which collection this mask originates.
