Description
David Alfaro Siqueiros (Mexican, 1896-1974), "Self Portrait", a colored lithograph on wove paper, signed on lower right in pencil, numbered IV/XXV on lower left in pencil, dates to 1969 CE. Custom framed and matted, a vibrant signed and numbered lithograph in colors depicting the cerebral countenance of this famed Mexican artist who lived a passionately politically-driven life. Those piercing green eyes looking out from a mature face with wrinkles earned over a lifetime and a thick head of silver hair speak volumes about this passionate artist. What's more the immense scale of Siqueiros' head and visage reflects his experience as a muralist and perhaps his grand sense of his own significance as an artist and the importance of his oeuvre. Size: image & signature/number measures 16.5" L x 12.25" W (41.9 cm x 31.1 cm); 34.125" L x 29.5" W (86.7 cm x 74.9 cm) framed
One of Los Tres Grandes (the Three Great Ones, along with Diego Rivera and Jose Clemente Orozco), this Mexican social realist artist pursued revolutionary themes inspired by the Spanish Civil War and the Mexican Revolution, in which he himself also participated. As a pioneer of the Mexican Mural Renaissance, Siqueiros also championed a nationalistic movement to demonstrate appreciation and respect for indigenous cultures and art forms.
