Item Details
Description
Sixth plate tintype of a seated African-American woman, her headdress is tinted robin-egg blue. While the subject's free/enslaved status is unknown, the portrait dates to the Civil War era (likely a bit before the onset of hostilities in 1861).

It has been suggested her manner of dress and the shawl she carries is consistent with a style favored in the American southwest.

Condition overall fine. Image is housed in a full leatherette case (separated at spine). Some distortion to the emulsion when viewed at raking light.

[Civil War, Abolition, Slavery, Abraham Lincoln, Antique photography, Daguerreotype, Ambrotype, Tintype, CDV, Black Americana]
