Frederick Landseer Maur Griggs (English, 1876-1938), "The Cresset"-circa 1915, etching, second state (of two states total), from a limited edition run of 38 impressions, pencil signed "F.L. Griggs" lower right margin. Finely rendered architectural etching depicting three figures in boat in water beside Gothic arched stone bridge ramparts, figure on bridge looking down beside stone structure. Unframed sheet size approximately 9.6" x 13.3". Image size approximately 6.6" x 9.7". Reference: Comstock, 12ii. Note: This work is included in "A Gothic Vision: F.L. Griggs and His Work" by Francis Adams Comstock, published by the Boston Public Library in 1978 (second printing) on pages 76 and 77. The author notes that other second state impressions of this work are located in collections at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, England; the British Museum in London, England; the Boston Public Library; the Library of Congress in Washington D.C.; and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
