Description
**Previously Listed At $200**
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A quintessential example of a Colima pottery 'gingerbread' female presenting a characteristically abstract body and rigid pose with out-turned, slightly bent legs, and hands held to sides with incised fingers. Nicely adorned with appliqued ear ornaments, turban headband with incised textile-inspired pattern, and 'beaded' pectoral - minimalist facial features including protruding nose and incised eyes and mouth. Custom stand. Size: 7.375" H (18.7 cm); 7.875" H (20 cm) on stand
An excellent example from the West Mexican shaft tomb tradition. Ceramic figurines such as this are among the most expressive and dramatic created in Mesoamerica. According to scholars of this tradition, such ceramic figures were the primary outlet for artistic expression of the shaft tomb cultures and there is little record of monumental architecture, stelae, or public art associated with these cultures. Nicely burnished surface with some mineral deposits.
Provenance: Ex-private Poway, CA collection, acquired 1960s to 1970
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
