Description
GREENE GRAHAM: (1904-1991) English Novelist. A good T.L.S., Graham Greene, one page, 8vo, Antibes, 21st February 1986, to Father Wheaton. Greene thanks his correspondent for their letter, which had given him great pleasure, and continues 'I am glad you enjoyed the film of Monsignor Quixote. I did too', further adding 'I must say that I had a little hand in it as I had approval of the script and also spent some time with the company in Spain'. Greene further writes 'I am glad too that you support me over Latin America. It's really absurd to talk of religious persecution. I don't think there is a single priest in prison. The President himself as a young man worked for a Catholic aid society among the poor of Managua' and concludes 'I am fond even of the Marxist Tomas Borge who is also a poet which makes him a bit more human'. Together with Alec Guinness (1914-2000) English Actor, Academy Award winner. Guinness starred in the film adaptation of Greene's novel Our Man in Havana (1959; as James Wormold) and in the television film adaptation of Greene's Monsignor Quixote (1985; in the title role). A.L.S., Alec Guinness, on one side of his personal printed correspondence card, n.p., 23rd May 1995, to Father Wheaton. Guinness informs his correspondent, 'Yes, Graham Greene was around much of the time we were doing Mgr. Quixote. But he was always around when his films were being made - anyway the ones I was in'. Two letters of interesting content. VG to EX, 2 Tomas Borge (1930-2012) Nicaraguan Statesman & Writer, co-founder of the Sandinista National Liberation Front. Daniel Ortega (1945- ) President of Nicaragua 1985-90 and again from 2007. Ortega was also a leader within the Sandinista National Liberation Front.
