Description
AMERICAN CAST-IRON BED, having a light brown-painted surface, casters, and ornate undulating foliate design on headboard and footboard. Late 19th/first half 20th century. HOA 44 3/4", 42" W, 78" L.
Good condition overall with some wear and flaking to painted surface and expected wear to surface where components join.

From the multi-generational family collection of the late Miss Mattie D. Spotswood (1885-1891) of "Stirling Castle", 320 High St., Petersburg.
Catalogue Note: Martha Dunlop Spotswood was born November 11, 1885 in Petersburg, Virginia to William Francisco Spotswood (1827-1895) and Isabella Matoca Dunlop Spotswood (1848-1922). Marth "Mattie" Spotswood was a descendant of Governor Alexander Spotswood (1676-1740). She was active in several Virginia historical organizations including the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities (APVA), Colonial Williamsburg, and the Virginia Historical Society, and made contributions of manuscripts to the Virginia State Library. Miss Spotswood died in Petersburg 26 May 1981 and is buried in Blandford Cemetery.
