Description
1816 An Essay on Man Alexander Pope Nature of God English Poetry Philosophy
“Blessed is he who expects nothing, for he shall never be disappointed.” ― Alexander Pope
‘An Essay on Man’ is a poem by Alexander Pope that was written as a variation to John Milton’s opening lines of ‘Paradise Lost.’ It focuses on the nature of God and how man cannot fully know God. It was incredibly popular from its initial release and gained its popularity from the optimistic forms of philosophy that Pope wrote about. According to Voltaire, ‘An Essay on Man’ is,
“the most beautiful, the most useful, the most sublime didactic poem ever written in any language.”
Rousseau wrote of it saying,
It “softens my ills and brings me patience”
Pope reveals in his introductory statement, "The Design," that ‘An Essay on Man’ was originally conceived as part of a longer philosophical poem, with four separate books.
