Description
Ancient Near East, northwestern Iran, Luristan, ca. 1200 to 800 BCE. An elegant and rare example of a bronze axe head with a rounded disc as its butt. The axe head was made using the lost wax casting technique. It has a cylindrical socket with thick rims above a narrow body; viewed from above, the body is an elongated diamond form, with pronounced points at either side of the socket. The blade itself is small, with a downcurved form and a narrow cutting edge. Size: 6.45" W x 1.6" H (16.4 cm x 4.1 cm); 3.6" H (9.1 cm) on included custom stand.
Bronze Age Luristan art was the work of nomadic herdsmen and horsemen who crafted small, portable objects, including daggers, swords, and other weapons. Weapons like this one would have been entombed in the small rock graves in which their owners were buried; similar pieces come from the archaeological sites of Marlik and Kalar Dasht.
Provenance: private L. S. Farrow collection, Colchester, United Kingdome; acquired from the late 1970s to early 1980s
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
