Spanish Colonial, Mexico, ca. 18th century CE. A large-scale oil-on-canvas painting depicting an episode from the Trial of Christ, a series of events that occurred between Christ's arrest in the garden of Gethsemane and the moment he was taken away to be crucified. Christ appeared before four judges - twice before Pontius Pilate. Here Christ stands before Pilate, bound by the wrists, and wearing the crown of thorns which suggests that he is about to be led away. An elderly man to Christ's left may be removing Christ's white garment in preparation for the Crucifixion. The scene takes place outside the governor's house, the columniated edifice depicted in the background. Pilate sits on a grand dais - the seat of judgement. Arguing elders and soldiers add to the drama of the scene. A fascinating painting displaying strong technique; particularly impressive is how adept the artist was at modeling the figures and delineating the cascading, voluminous folds of Christ's and Pilate's garments. The original painted canvas has been relined with a new canvas behind; however, original stretchers remain. The painting shows wear, a few possible areas of repair, and losses commensurate with age. Nice craquelure. With some restoration, this painting would shine in any collection.
