Description
Chinese Tomb Pottery Horse Head, probably Han Dynasty. Partial Tomb Figurine, Han Dynasty. Hole at the top where some type of ornamentation or horse hair once was. Measures 9"x3.40"x12" tall. Weight 5 pds 8 oz. Terracotta with traces of pigment. As early as the Han dynasty (206 B.C.-A.D. 220), pottery and bronze representations of Central Asian horses were considered essential to the tomb furnishings of high officials. The frequency and exceptional sculptural quality of the pottery horses consigned to tombs of the wealthy in the Tang dynasty illustrate the importance attached to the fine breeds imported from Central Asia-specifically the kingdom of Ferghana. PROVENANCE: A Charleston SC Private Collection.
