Following the Guidon by Elizabeth B. Custer. Harper & Brothers., New York., 1890. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 16 full page engraved plates, inc frontis of "Custer with His Scouts" + the music of "Garryowen" and "The Girl I left Behind Me" both with lyrics. Original green embossed cloth, light chocolate color endpapers, a little light aging to paper, crisp clean copy . The author was the wife of General George Armstrong Custer. She spent most of their marriage in relatively close proximity to him despite his numerous military campaigns as a commanding officer in the United States Cavalry. After his death, she became an outspoken advocate for her husband?s legacy through her popular books and lectures. Largely as a result of her endless campaigning on his behalf, Custer?s iconic portrayal as the gallant fallen hero amid the glory of ?Custer?s Last Stand? was a canon of American history for almost a century after his death. This book is beautifully illustrated with 16 plates including the frontispiece. There are also many in-text illustrations throughout. This book was the second book by General George Custer?s wife which was intended to honor her husband as well as describing their life together. Measures 7.50"x5.50"x1.50" Weight 1 pd 4 oz.
