LEE/ROSE NO. 244 AND 244-X-1 CUP PLATES, LOT OF TWO, colorless, major variation with cavetto pattern lacking the central quatrefoil, each having 19 large scallops with single point between. Uncertain rarity. Probably Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 1830-1845. 3 1/2" D.
Near proof, first with partial loss of one scallop, second with partial loss of one point.
Literature: Lee/Rose - American Glass Cup Plates, p. 192 and Bilane - Cup Plate Discoveries Since 1948, p. 15 records variation and one example.
Provenance: Collection of Jim Lawrence and Denver Smallwood, Chattanooga, TN.
Variation: John Bilane, 9/82.
Catalogue Note: This is the first example of No. 244-X-1 that we have sold. A note on plate's sleeve states there are seven known examples per John Bilane. An example from the Marble collection was included in the 1954 Corning exhibit (case 37, #626) and included by Rose in his new "100 Best" colored list. He stated, "A newly discovered, unique, variant."
