Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. A mold-made pottery plaque with a low relief image of a child with "African" features as the Romans portrayed them. The child has curly hair and chubby cheeks, and is shown wearing what looks like a necklace comprised of two strands of a pearls or large beads. Comes with custom stand. Size: 1.75" W x 2.4" H (4.4 cm x 6.1 cm); height on stand: 3.8" (9.7 cm).
Portraits of children became common in Rome in the later part of the 2nd century CE. Whether this was a portrait of an individual or something mass produced is unclear, but overall it is a friendly representation.
