after ANTONIO CANOVA (Italian 1757-1822) A PATINATED BRONZE SCULPTURE, "Hercules And Lychas," cast by Delafontaine foundry, Paris, France, circa 1870-1900, the figural group with dark brown patination with undertones of gold, of Hercules clad in a flowing loincloth, reaching behind and grasping the upturned figure of Lychas, a crumpled shirt, and Hercules's club on the shaped ground beside a tapered pedestal, signed "Canova fec." on the base and with marks for Delafontaine foundry on the pedestal. Height: 16 3/4" Width: 11" Depth: 8" NOTE: Based on Book IX of Ovid's Metamorphoses in which the story of Hercules receiving a gift from the centaur of a shirt poisoned with the blood of Nessus. Assuming he had been betrayed by his servant Lychas, Hercules picked up his hapless helper and catapulted him into the waves of the Euboic Sea.

In overall good condition with minor rubbing and wear to patinated surfaces.
