Framed oil on board by Jan Van Empel (1880-1940, Alaska, New Hampshire). The painting depicts a harbor scene beneath an Alaskan mountain range. Signed by the artist lower left, and titled "Alaska". Measures 11.75" x 13-5/8". Well framed in an Arts & Crafts bat wing / pie crust frame, 18" x 20".
NOTE: Jan Van Empel is considered to be the first modernist style painter of Alaska scenes.
PROVENANCE: From the Horace Willard Nagley family collection.
BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: Horace Willard "H.W." Nagley (1875-1966) Alaska Pioneer / Frontier Merchant at Susitana Station, McDougal and Talkeetna, Alaska.
