Charles Koster, 1893, after Alphonse Marie De Neuville, Franco-Prussian battle scene of a deceased officer lying in state, attended by other officers, oil on canvas signed, dated and annotated "After De Neuville" lower right. Charles Koster was said to be a famous artist who was born in France and left under mysterious circumstances, taking a beautiful French woman with him, arriving in the U.S. and changing his name to "Charles Koster". While living in Truckee in the early 1890's, Koster produced 3 large, well executed paintings, 2 of which depicted scenes from the Franco-Prussian war. Appx 56 1/4" x 80 1/4", frame 69" x 93". Very good original condition.
