Item Details
Description
Europe, ca. 18th century CE. An iron padlock and matching key. Primitive padlocks have been known in Europe since the Roman period if not earlier; the name may reference an animal paddock, which needed to be kept locked, and which comes from the Viking settlements of York, England. The body of the padlock is heavy, with a thick, curved bar of iron forming the loop; the key itself is intricate, with a series of notches on two sides and an openwork interior. Size: 6.75" L x 3.5" W (17.1 cm x 8.9 cm)
