Description
A pair of antique Khmer style Temple Guardian or Lion figures (a pair), in the Angkor period, style of Banteay Srei 10th century. The “guardians of the gate”, are placed around the outside of a temple to serve both as greeters and defenders, they were specifically intended to protect the principle entrances of temples. Each statue is carved in the round to show a strength body with an ornate coiffure with full lips and almond-shaped eyes with incised pupils beneath gently curving brows. The casting of this piece is beautiful as you can see in the fine details of the face. Each detail is rendered perfectly. The distinctive patina of the piece is also particularly delightful.
