Description
East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 1800 CE. A hand-carved wooden figure of Caishen, the god of prosperity of Chinese Taoism and folk religion. Here he is depicted atop a tall, tiered pedestal, riding his traditional mount, a tiger. The tiger's head is turned to face the viewer, its snarling visage gazing directly forward. Caishen is depicted with a long beard, staring directly at the viewer through round eyes. He holds a rod in his hand that was probably once painted gold. His clothing is detailed, with scaled armor on his shirt and underneath his skirt. A fierce addition to any household! Size: 7.5" W x 23.75" H (19 cm x 60.3 cm)
