AMERICAN FOLK ART CARVED AND PAINTED CANE / WALKING STICK, an outstanding example featuring a knotty, snake-entwined shaft and delicately carved fist for handle. Fine original surface with warm color. Possibly Ohio or Tennessee. Late 19th/early 20th century. 40" L.
Excellent condition with minor wear.
Catalogue Note: According to the consignor, the present folk art cane was originally owned by Samuel McMillen (1835-1918). McMillen was born in Allen Co., Ohio and died in Blount Co., Tennessee, where he moved some time after 1900. He served in the Civil War as Private, Co. I, 100th Ohio Vol. Infantry. The exact significance of the clenched fist displayed on the present walking stick is uncertain at present; however, similar imagery has long been associated with African-American resistance movements, both during and after the period of slavery.
