Publishers' green cloth, with horse illustrations to the front board in silver, lettered in silver, pictorial light green endpapers with horse illustration in dark green. With just a touch of wear to extremities, else fine. Overall, a bright and pleasing copy. Petersen A30.1. Notes on a Horsethief is a novella that was originally conceived as a pre-WWI adventure for one of the fictional British soldiers that would later appear in his 1954 novel A Fable. Specifically, it tells of the soldier's trip to the United States, where he teams up with an African-American stable hand to steal an injured prize-winning racehorse to prevent him from being retired prematurely. Interestingly, although written in a markedly different style, Faulkner was able to adapt Notes on a Horsetheif into A Fable, where the novella is situated as an episode within the novel's larger framework. Notably, although many are set there, this is the only of Faulkner's works to be published in his home state, Mississippi.
