Description
DESCRIPTION: Marshall Johnson Jr. (Massachusetts, 1850-1921). Oil on canvas depicting a maritime scene. Signed lower left. Wood frame. Johnson was educated at the Lowell Institute. He was a member of the Boston Art Club and Copley Society. Many of his paintings are in private hands, however, he is represented at the Peabody Museum in Salem. At the age of eighteen, he was a sailor aboard the Sunbeam bound for South America. The ship burned at sea, but he was rescued. PROVENANCE: From a prominent Boston area, Massachusetts estate. MEASUREMENTS: 24" x 17-1/2". Overall with frame 30" x 23-1/2". CONDITION: Soiling. Loose in frame. Frame with losses. Undulation to canvas. 2" tear to top right of painting.
