Item Details
Description
Europe, Pierre Toussaint Frederic Mialhe (French, 1810-1868) after Carlos (Carl) Nebel (German, 1805-1855), "La Piramide de Papantla", ca. 1836-1839 CE and "Templo Antiguo de los Totonacos in Tusapan", ca. 1836-1839 CE. A pair of beautiful hand-colored lithographs by Pierre Toussaint Frederic Mialhe - a French lithographer and painter of portrait and genre subjects, after works by Carlos Nebel, a German-born artist best known for his drawings of Mexican architecture and landscapes in addition to his contributions to 19th century costumbrismo, a form of literature addressing customs and manners. Two stunning works, set in matching sky blue and white mats under glass in gilded decorative frames. Size: 10.75" L x 13.875" W (27.3 cm x 35.2 cm); 19.25" L x 22" W (48.9 cm x 55.9 cm) including double mat and frame

Nebel was among the early European visitors to the archaeological site of El Tajin. He sojourned to Mexico between 1829 and 1834, recording numerous ancient ruins and published an account accompanied by 50 hand-colored lithographs in the illustrated text, "Viaje pintoresco y arqueológico sobre la parte más interesante de la República Mejicana" (Picturesque and Archeological Voyage Over the Most Intriguing Part of the Mexican Republic, ca. 1836-39). His oeuvre demonstrated remarkable documentary accuracy as well as artistic idealization - truly visual poetry. Emile Lasalle was an accomplished artist in his own right who exhibited at the Salons between 1834 and 1869. In addition to his lithographs of Mesoamerica, Mailhe is also known for his Cuban works; he traveled to Cuba in 1838 commissioned to create views of the island for Real Sociedad Patriotica and created a series of lithographs entitled, "Isla de Cuba", "Isla de Cuba Pintoresca", and "Viaje Pintoresco por la Isla de Cuba".
