Item Details
Description
Europe, United Kingdom, ca. late 18th to early 19th century CE. An incredible miniature globe depicting six continents (Antarctica's true shape was not known until the mid 19th century). Using the scrimshaw technique, the artist has carved the other six continents, whaling grounds in the South Pacific, and an image of a king or god on a throne, wearing a crown and holding a trident, across the Atlantic. An excellent rendition of a sailing ship is in the Indian Ocean. The location of the whaling grounds helps narrow down the date of the piece, because whalers did not enter that area until the late 1780s / 1790s. A unique, fascinating piece, especially if you are interested in the history of exploration. Size: 1.8" W (4.6 cm)

Provenance: private Atlanta, Georgia collection, USA
