15th century Vietnamese white stoneware covered box with underglaze blue painting on the cover and the base from Hoi An hoard, a historic sunken ship off Cu Lao Cham, central Vietnam. The box was made at Chu Dau in the Red River Delta, and was part of a cargo bound for the South-East Asia (Sumatra, Java or Borneo). The wreck was found in the mid-90's, the ceramics were taken to the surface, and sold by Butterfields in San Francisco in 2000. Excellent free painting of a lotus flower surrounded by a band of stylized petals on the cover, all within triple circle, nice mellow matte surface with wonderful patina, in great condition. Hoi An Butterfields stickers on the side and bottom. Height 1 1/4 inches, diameter 2 1/16 inches.
