15th century Vietnamese white stoneware covered box with underglaze blue painting on the cover from Hoi An hoard, a historic sunken ship off Cu Lao Cham, central Vietnam. The box was made at Chu Dau in the Red River Delta, and was part of a cargo bound for the South-East Asia (Sumatra, Java or Borneo). The wreck was found in the mid-90's, the ceramics were taken to the surface, and sold by Butterfields in San Francisco in 2000. Excellent free painting of bright abbreviated landscape in scholarly taste on the cover, all within double circle, nice mellow matte surface with wonderful patina. Hoi An Butterfields stickers on the side and bottom. Height 1 1/2 inches, diameter 2 1/8 inches.
