Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche IV, ca. 200 to 500 CE. A large, flat-bottomed, ovoid bichrome terracotta stirrup-spouted vessel with fine-line painted russet brown step and stylized geometric motifs on a cream ground. Pieces like these were often used for holding sacred fermented liquids used in ceremonies or placed in graves as offerings. A wonderful example, impressive for its elegant form as well as its painted decorative program. Size: 6.125" W x 9.5" H (15.6 cm x 24.1 cm)
This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) and has been found to be ancient; if purchased, you will receive a report confirming its age.
