Description
James Henry Moser: Genre Watercolors. Group of three framed watercolors by artist/illustrator James Henry Moser (1854-1913). Along with Frederick S. Church, he provided illustrations for Joel Chandler Harris's "Uncle Remus" (1881). He also did freelance work for Harper's, Century, Leslie's and Atlantic Monthly. The key work is a double-matted and framed watercolor of a bare-foot boy and his dog titled "Philander". It measures 8.75" x 12" [sight] and is inscribed in the lower left corner: "J. H. Moser To My Friend Harry Sedgwick Jan. 24 96". Harry Sedgwick was the nephew of noted Civil War Union General John Sedgwick. Next is a matted and framed watercolor of a fishing or camping scene. It measures 11.25" x 8.25" [sight] and is inscribed in the lower left corner: "Camp Segmose Lake Wonqum. H. Moser Aug 10 94." Finally, we have a 4.5" x 3.5" watercolor portrait of a young boy, inscribed "J. H. Moser For 'Ben' Oct-17-1889." Examples of Moser's work appear in the White House and National Portrait Gallery.
