Description
Alcott, Louisa May. Little Women or, Meg Jo, Beth and Amy. Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1869. Part one of the first edition, as noted at bottom of page 341, second state. 16mo, rebound in red/terra cotta cloth, printed endpapers, 341pp plus 10pp ads. Early edition as there is no "Part First" on spine.
Alcott published Little Women when she was 35-years-old, based loosely on her and her sisters' experiences growing to womanhood in the mid-nineteenth century. The first 2,000 copies sold out immediately, and has never been out of print since the first copies were sold in 1868-1869. Others followed, with part two of Little Women delivered to the publisher on 1 Jan. 1869, with editions even in late 1869 containing both parts. Later Little Men (1871) and Jo's Boys (1886) were added.
