Description
Philippines, Northern Luzon, Ifugao, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden male figure known as a bulul, with arms and legs wrapped around a large cup and explicitly delineated genitalia on the underside. Bululs are abstract representations ancestors that were created to serve as protectors of the rice crop. The Ifugao are known for their great artistry and skill at carving bululs. Sculpted with the utmost skill for this genre, truly among the finest examples of this type as most date much later and are considerably more roughly carved. A wonderful published example with rich dark patina. Size: 2.25" H (5.7 cm); 4" H (10.2 cm) on included custom stand.

Condition
Hairline age fissure to left side of head. Otherwise excellent with rich dark patina and earthen deposits in recesses. Inventory label on underside of stand.
