Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. Two wonderful hand-built terracotta seated figures, one male and the other female, both with a deep-red slip coating. The female figure sits with one leg folded under the other, with arms curved and meeting at her abdomen, and displays a series of white-painted details like her skirt, necklace, and shoulder adornments. She has characteristic "sheepface" qualities such as a projecting nose, pointed ears with large earspools, coffee-bean-shaped eyes, and a tall forehead with a striped headband. The male figure has both legs bent in front of him, with sinuous arms resting on his knees; he also displays similar white-painted embellishments. His visage has similar facial characteristics as the female, though notable differences like the pierced earspools and incised headband design stand out. Size of largest (male): 8.375" H (21.3 cm).
