Item Details
Description
**Originally Listed At $200**

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. Two hand-built terracotta seated figures, each covered in a deep red earthtone slip. The visages of both figures exhibit characteristic "sheepface" qualities such as coffee-bean-shaped eyes, pointed ears, disc-shaped earspools, projecting noses, and tall foreheads. The first figure has one leg folded beneath a striped and spotted skirt, one arm folded to her abdomen under globular breasts, the other reaching to her ear; white-painted embellishments and a thin headband complete her overall appearance. The second figure, resting beneath a polka-dotted shawl, displays wide shoulders, stocky feet with stylized toes, and a tall headband with incised crosshatch patterns and a white swirled crest in the center. Both figures are wonderful figural representations from this ancient shaft-tomb culture! Size of tallest (no shawl): 6.25" H (15.9 cm).

Provenance: private Stagecoach, Nevada, USA collection; acquired from 1985 to present from galleries such as Arte Primitivo, Art For Eternity, Butterfields, and Riverbend Gallery
