Description
Flemish School, 17th century, Circle of Cornelis de Vos (1584-1651), octagonal portrait of a lady, presumably a noblewoman, attired in a black dress and large white lace collar. Heraldic device upper right corner bears similarities to one that appears on a portrait of Philips Doubleth, born The Hague, South Holland, The Netherlands, c. 1590. Housed in an ebonized octagonal frame with gilt rabbet edge. Sight - 33 1/2" H x 36" W. Framed - 42 1/2" H x 45 1/2" W. Provenance: Private Tennessee collection, acquired in Antwerp, Belgium in the early 1980s by private sale from owners who had purchased it in Holland several years earlier. Condition
Painting lined; yellowed varnish. 7 areas of previous repair with inpainting, largest 1/2" L; scattered minute losses. Small area of splattered dark accretions on left side of sitter's face. Canvas has shifted slightly in frame with small gap visible upper left side. Black light shows uneven varnish. Frame is in good condition with area of loss of lacquer/ebonized veneer to outer edge on left side.
