Description
A FINE REGENCY PERIOD GEORGE III GILT BRONZE MOUNTED MARQUETRY INLAID MAHOGANY TALL CASE CLOCK, ENGLISH, CIRCA 1780-1850, the pagoda crest, centering an oval portrait frame, flanked by brass urn form finials, surmounting bellflower inlaid stiles, above a shaped arched window, opening to an arched parcel gilt, polychrome, iron shaped face, the upper reserve painted with a neoclassical figure of a forlorn maiden, seated among craggy rocks, gazing toward the sea, within a cream painted border dotted with leopard and stripped shells, surmounting a date dial, and an Arabic numeral painted minute and hour marked clock dial, signed "Johnson Ripon;" within bronze mounted Corinthian, fluted columns, above a cavetto frieze, over an arched, shaped pendulum door with inlaid holly leaves and milk thistle blossoms, above an inlaid highly figured oval medallion, opening to a brass over lead pendulum on an iron arm, flanked by engaged, ormolu mounted fluted Corinthian columns, on a rectangular base with a string inlaid figured square reserve, raised on slightly splayed bracket feet, joined by a dual arched skirt; the clockworks have an etched "W" on one gear, and the clock face verso bears an impressed "T," etched 15313, and a large number 2, includes two weights. Height: 90" Width: 20" Depth: 10"
Condition
Unknown working condition. The veneer has cracking throughout, some losses and various repairs. The surface has mild chips, dents, dark marks, and scratches throughout, but mostly at base. Patina on all mounts. There is dust debris and a few occasional white paint drips. The escutcheon now lacking. There is a vertical crack at left of base, and some wood on the interior has some cracks. The crown has some separation from side rails and mild losses. The clock face has craquelure throughout, some intermittent paint wear and losses, and appears to have been cleaned in the 20th century, as it fluoresces purple under ultraviolet inspection mostly near the center. The dial has some fading of the painted numerals. The hands are likely not original. 20th century glue residue appears at back near clockwork mounting. Various clock service numbers intermittently throughout back of clock face and pendulum. Professional repairs are apparent throughout. Overall in very good condition, wear commensurate with age and use.
