This example is oriented vertically, with a clear display of the geode rim along one side and a curved perimeter on the other showing the various sizes and structures of individual amethyst crystals. The name of this popular purple gemstone is Greek in origin and means "not drunken." Some scholars suggest that this was due to the belief that amethyst had the power to stave off the effects of alcohol; however, most believe that the Greeks were probably referring to the near wine-like hue of some amethyst stones. Back is sealed and has some plastering as well as a large number "15" written with white paint. Crystals are all in excellent condition.
