Description
Ca. 1800, 413 x 154, West Anatolia, Manisa Province
The red field of this large single-panel kilim is dominated by six huge box-shaped medallions, each enclosing a hooked design of totemistic appearance placed on a white ground. The kilim was probably woven by a Turkmen tribal group in the area between Manisa and Ushak. The reciprocal crenellations placed at the sides of the field represent a mural crown. Brüggemann has published a different example of this rare group with a field design composed of two medallions. – Several missing sections, mounted onto canvas.
