Description
Pre 1800, 130 x 70 cm, Central Anatolia, Cappadocia
This small fragment is from a very old kilim probably woven by Hotamis Turkmen in the Nigde region. Like the readily comparable example published in our auction catalogue no. 72, it is likely that the kilim originally consisted of two long panels. The surviving fragment is a section of one panel. Four hexagons in aubergine, green, red and blue lie on the white ground, each bearing four large hooks with curled ends extending far to the sides; there are also remnants of the lateral border and elem finish. The outstanding quality of the vibrant colours and dense weaving structure are certain indications of an early date. - Mounted onto canvas.
HASSON 2007 Tf. S. 57 *** RIPPON BOSWELL, A 72, Lot 156 *** BALPINAR/HIRSCH 1982, Tf. 39 *** COOTNER/MUSE 1990, Tf. 38
