Item Details
Description
THE HOLY BIBLE. CONTEINING THE OLD TESTAMENT AND THE NEW. NEWLY TRANSLATED OUT OF THE ORIGINALL TONGUES. London: Robert Barker, 1612-13. 4to. A8, A-Zzz8, [A]-[M]8. Lacking Kkk3-4, being two leaves from the Apocrypha (Esdras); a few leaves of Psalms possibly supplied from another copy. [BOUND WITH] Genealogies by John Speed: A-D4, E2, F2, including double-page map of Canaan. Bound at front, following a defective and partial book of common prayer. [BOUND WITH] THE BOOKE OF PSALMS, COLLECTED INTO ENGLISH MEETRE... London, 1614. A-G8, H7 (lacking H8.) Bound after the Bible. **** The whole bound in modern calf with spine lettered in gilt. Contents with occasional soiling, typical age-toning, some margins cropped into neatline and/or with frayed edges, some marginal tears and chips, Bible and Genealogies Good to Very Good overall (the other matter bound at front and back with paper repairs and some loss of text.) ********************************* Comports most closely with Herbert 313 (the first quarto edition of the King James Bible, 1612) with the NT title omitting "Appointed," Gen. x, 16 reading "Emorite," and Ruth iii, 15, reading "hee." However, the general title is dated 1613, while the NT title and colophon are dated 1612. This would suggest Herbert 320; however, "Appointed" is not omitted on the general title (Herbert 320 calls for both titles to omit this), and Ruth iii, 15 reads "hee" (Herbert 320 call for "she".) Quite possibly the 1612 edition (Herbert 313) with general title taken from another edition. Provenance: With early ink signature of William Armstrong, Dorchester, Oxfordshire to blank page at front of Psalms, and 18th century signatures of Mary and Joseph Collins to NT title verso.
