Description:
[8], 80 pp. (8vo) 20.6x13 cm, (8¼x5"), modern quarter morocco, marbled paper boards, gilt lettering. First Edition, preceding the published trade edition of the same year.
The Regicide, which Smollett brought with him to London as an 18-year old in 1739 and upon which he had hoped to establish his literary career, was never acted, and he was forced to go to sea as a ship's surgeon instead.
In his preface here, Smollett gives an account of his assorted reversals in attempting to get the tragedy produced; the account of Melopoyn's tragedy in Roderick Random is the fictionalized version of Smollett's ill usage at the hands of peers, theatre managers and ersatz patrons.
