East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 1644 to 1912 CE. Two brightly painted roof tiles, both capped by a seated figure of a Longma, a winged horse with dragon scales from Chinese mythology, a good omen connected to the dragon and the ruler. Both have sancai-like glaze, mostly green, with yellow details on the mane, tail, feathers, and snout, and cream and black eyes with black hooves. These examples have a fascinating international history - they were brought to the United States and stood for many years on the roof of a house in New Orleans, before being salvaged after Hurricane Katrina. They reflect the international appeal of Chinese design. Size of one (they are very close in size): 9.5" L x 3.95" W x 11.45" H (24.1 cm x 10 cm x 29.1 cm)
