Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Inca, ca. 1438 to 1533 CE. A beautiful utilitarian axe head, hand-carved from a single piece of mottled green stone with beige and black inclusions, all hand-polished to a lustrous sheen. A pair of hook-like extensions projects outwards from the back of the blade to which one would have attached a handle,using the grooves to wrap ties and strap the handle to the blade. The axe portion is comprised of a crescent-shaped head with a sharp edge. A rare and fascinating example, most likely used for ceremonial purposes, from the ancient Incan Empire!
