Description
Black wool jacket appliquéd with velvet strips in various colors with tambour-embroidered scrolls and fancy braided ties, Ch-40, L-23 1/2 (some wear to velvet, moth holes to lining, missing a tassel); blue velvet fall-front knee breeches having black braid decoration and knee tassels, silver filigree buttons, W-32, Ins-16, (two broken buttons); a black velvet pillbox hat with label from 1864 Exposition; two red wool sashes with polychrome tambour embroidery and fringe (minor holes and spots), and a pair of tan leather gaitors with appliqué embroidery, leather tassels and buckles (two straps torn on one). There are several items in the Larson collection with tags that say "Butterfield" or "General Butterfield". Tag on this ensemble notes "General Butterfield". General Daniel Adams Butterfield (1831-1901) was a Union General during the Civil War. Married Julia Safford James (b. 1824) in 1886. Probably Eastern European, perhaps acquired during travels. He and Julia traveled to Russia in 1890 after their 1886 wedding.
