Description
19th Century c1830 English Medallion Quilt measuring 98in x 100in. The center is Chintz Panel #33 in Chintz Panel research by Brackman and Waldvogel, Swans Under Bridge (1780-1815). It is a rare print and there are only 3 quilts known to exist that incorporate it, including this one. It is set on point and measures 25in x 25.5in. And set in a square 37.5in x 37.5in with 2 more fabulous chintz fabrics. The inner frame is about 23in wide and consists of hexagon rosettes appliqued onto the off-white ground. The outer frame is again, squares on point set with more prints and chintz fabrics, including an interesting Wellington commemorative print. The quilt is entirely made by hand: hand pieced, hand appliqued, and hand quilted. There is no batting. The edge is knife edge finished with a line of stitches along the edge perimeter, typical of an English quilt. One the back is a small hand embroidered petit point label. The date on the label is much later than the fabrics. Research suggests that the date was when Elizabeth was married, so this may have been a wedding gift. Please see our You Tube Channel for a video preview of this quilt.
Condition
It is in very good condition with some minor spots and, one hexagon showing deterioration, and splits in the swans in the center chintz panel.
