BRITISH MAP USED ON THE RETREAT TO DUNKIRK
British military map believed used during the B.E.F. retreat to the French port of Dunkirk, 34" x 25", labeled at top: "Lille-Ghent Sheet No. 2 NOT TO BE PUBLISHED". Printed in 1938 by the British War Office on a scale of 1:250,000, the map notes that it drew on existing French, Dutch and Belgian examples. The names of about 25 Belgian and French cities and towns have been underlined by hand in ink, and they create and arc from Brussels westward to Lille, then northwest to Dunkirk. At Dunkirk, a pencil hemisphere extends into the English Channel and is further marked with a small "x". The well-used map bears a pencil note on the left margin: "Dunkirk", the verso marked long ago by a British dealer: "Map used on retreat to Dunkirk 1940 20 pounds". The map has been silked on the verso to preserve its physical integrity.
