Item Details
Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A petite yet sturdy cast-bronze votive object in the form of a flat-bottomed phallus. The overall form is comprised of a wide body, a flared tip embellished with several spiralized grooves, and a slightly-abraded tip. Pale-green and light-brown layers of patina exhibit the tell-tale signs of age and natural wear. Phalluses are prevalent Roman symbols evocative of virility and fertility and, when depicted disembodied like this example, were used as what Pliny wrote of as a "medicus invidiae" to ward against the evil eye. Size: 1.25" W x 2.875" H (3.2 cm x 7.3 cm).
