Chinesco Nayarit Seated Hunchback Figures (pr)
Chinesco Nayarit Seated Hunchback Figures (pr)
Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A pair of seated figures, each a hunchback with a round head, incised hair above a heart-shaped face, and nose rings. Each is seated, with one hand on his or her knee, and the other hand raised to the shoulder, holding a vessel. Both figures have bubbled, applied scarification marks on one of their shoulders, which may indicate social status or family membership. Both are hunchbacked, with the larger having a rounded back and the smaller having clearly delineated ribs. Hunchbacks make frequent appearances in the art of the shaft tomb cultures of West Mexico - scholars believe they were thought of as powerful, shamanic figures. Size of largest: 5.85" L x 5.85" W x 8.75" H (14.9 cm x 14.9 cm x 22.2 cm)

This style of sculpture is known as Chinesco by collectors because of its stylistic similarities to Chinese art. Clay figures like these are the only remains that we have today of a sophisticated and unique culture in West Mexico - they made no above-ground monuments or sculptures, at least that we know of, which is in strong contrast to developments elsewhere in ancient Mesoamerica. Instead, their tombs were their lasting works of art: skeletons arrayed radially with their feet positioned inward, and clay offerings, like this one, placed alongside the walls facing inward, near the skulls. Larger effigies like these would most likely have flanked the entrance to a tomb in a way that archaeologists have interpreted as guarding. Some scholars have connected these dynamic sculptures as a strong contrast to the skeletal remains whose space they shared, as if they mediated between the living and the dead.

Provenance: private Pacific Palisades, California, USA collection; ex private New Jersey collection, collected in 1960s & ex Sidney Newman collection, collected 1950s-1970s; pre-1983
