Description
Memoirs of Madame de Rémusat, 1802-1808. Mrs. Cashel Hoey and John Lillie (translators). Published by Appleton, 1880. Binding: Hardcover. Book Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Jacket. This is the complete three-volume 1880 Appleton publication of Mrs. Cashel Hoey and John Lillie's translation of Memoirs of Madame de Rémusat, 1802-1808 (688 total pages), with a preface and notes by her grandson, Paul de Rémusat, senator. Madame de Rémusat's full name is penned, calligraphy (by later owners), above her printed name, on the Volume I title page. A brief family lineage is also written on the adjacent page. The covers, dark brown morocco spines and corners, marbled boards, gilt lettering and decoration, are structurally sound, but with a number of scuffs, including surface tears. The spines are straight. The gilt is unfaded. The attachments to the insides are secure, with no covers loose. The overall appearance is good. These copies were the property of the illustrator Marie R. Audubon, grand-daughter of John James Audubon. Her distinctive bookplate, with the Audubon turkey illustration, with her signature at the bottom, is on each front inside cover. Her signature is repeated, with the date 1880, at the top of the right hand page in each second spread. The names of more recent owners (dated 1970), the calligraphers, are on the second spread of the first volume, but not in the others. There are no other attachments or notations. The bindings are tight, with no loose or missing pages. There are no tears or creases.
