A beautiful example of Black Quartz in its natural rock matrix, mined in the Himalayan Mountains of Tibet, considered by many to be one of the most sacred places on Earth. Because the mines are not easily accessible by machinery, most Tibetan Quartz is excavated and removed in sacks by hand, sometimes by monks. Black, or smoky, quartz is one of only a few black minerals used in the cutting of gemstones. The cause of smoky quartz’s coloration is not definitively known but is almost certainly related to the stone’s exposure to radiation. Natural smoky quartz often occurs in granitic rocks which have a small but persistent amount of radioactivity. Black and white coloration, custom-fitted in a metal base.
